MOVEMENT FOR THE ORDINATION OF WOMEN

bringing change and understanding

bringing change and understanding

Tanja Hagedorn

General Representative

I grew up in the German Evangelical Lutheran Church in South Africa which provided me with a firm foundation for my faith, a deep love for the church and a freedom to be myself and embrace others. Through my travels I have experienced many different denominations and expressions of the Christian faith. I was drawn to St Andrew’s Anglican Church in Indooroopilly, Brisbane, which has felt like a warm spiritual embrace.

I recently completed my Masters in Peace and Conflict Studies. My research topic was “Breaking the Stained Glass Ceiling – more than a change in policy?” and it gave me the opportunity to investigate cultural violence in the form of gender inequality in the church, using the Anglican Church of Australia as a case study. MOW was a particular focus of study and the interviews with some of the women who had been part of the decades long activism to achieve the ordination for women inspired me to be part of this movement. In my professional capacity in the social change sector my focus is on the transformation of issues that underly conflict and I hope to be able to apply this lens to the work of MOW.
